Richard Lawrence Johnson, professor and chair of the department of music, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2006. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a doctorate degree in conducting from Michigan State University.
As a conductor, Johnson is internationally known for his interpretation of the music of composer David Rakowski, the Hedwig Van Amerigen Rome Prize recipient at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. He has appeared as guest conductor of the United States Naval Academy Band Chamber Music Series with chief musician Marcia Diehl and the Arlington Echo Advanced String Orchestra Camps in Annapolis, Md. He has studied conducting with Harry Begian, Kenneth Bloomquist, Eugene Corporon, Bernard Goodman, Paul Vermel and David Whitwell.
He continues to maintain an extensive schedule as clinician, adjudicator and consultant in the fine arts and holds memberships in the Conductors Guild, the College Band Directors National Association and the National Association for Music Education.
His areas of expertise include aesthetic education, philosophy of aesthetics, performance practices, arts education, conducting and the history of music (western European/American tradition).
