Gregory Martel, associate professor of exercise and sport science, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2006. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Salisbury University in 1991, and a master's degree and doctorate degree in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland College Park in 1996 and 1998, respectively.
Martel is research coordinator for the Allison Sloan Chandler Smith Exercise Science Laboratory. He holds active memberships in the American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Prior to Coastal, Martel taught at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Highlights from his tenure at UMES include serving as lead author and project director for a grant funded by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration titled "An Interdisciplinary Approach to Reducing Obesity." He re-established the UMES Institutional Review Board for research involving human subjects and served as co-chair from 2003-2006.
His areas of expertise include exercise physiology, exercise/fitness testing, and exercise and aging (for elderly individuals with and without cardiopulmonary disease).
