Coastal Carolina University will celebrate the 2014 Ella Baker Day on Tuesday, April 15, honoring the civil rights activist Ella Baker. This event aims to foster greater discussion regarding participatory democracy, social justice and contemporary actions needed to create a more just and ethical society. All events are free and open to the public.
Ella Josephine Baker was born Dec. 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Va. Both sets of her grandparents grew up under slavery. One of this nation's greatest activists, Baker worked with notable organizations such as Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). She has been recognized as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement and was known for her belief in the potential and dignity of every individual. She died on Dec. 13, 1986, in New York.
The celebration is a three part event:
* A poster presentation held by CCU students will highlight the work and contributions of Ella Baker.
1:30 to 3 p.m. on Prince Lawn
* A film screening of “Fundi: The Story of Ella Baker.”
6 to 7 p.m. in Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts room 256
* The panel discussion entitled “The Legacy of Ella Baker” will discuss what it means to follow in the steps of Ella Baker as well as the contemporary struggles that women of color encounter in their activist work.
7 to 8 p.m. in Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts room 256
The panel features: Nadae Beaty, president of Students Advocating Gender Equality (SAGE); Barbara Blain-Olds, attorney, member of City Council and coordinator of River Reads; Bertha Fladger, CCU Multicultural Student Services; Tamara Jackson, Vice President of NAACP CCU Chapter; Lula Tucker, president of the CCU Women of Color Organization; and, Zenobia Washington, director of Georgetown’s My Brother’s Keeper Organization.
The event is sponsored by The Social Justice Research Initiative (SJRI) and Women’s and Gender Studies (WGST).
