CCU's Symphonic Band to perform premiere of new work
The band, composed of some 60 Coastal students of all majors, will perform the world premiere of "Passages," a piece composed by Josh Hinkel, a graduate music education student. Hinkel, from Easley, graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in music education. He is currently a Coastal Band and Percussion graduate assistant and plans to graduate from CCU with a master's degree of arts in teaching this summer.
Hinkel is a professional composer and arranger for the Joanis Creative Group from San Antonio, Texas. Passages of his latest work, "The Wishing Well," will be published this spring through JCG Publications. His works for band and percussion have been performed throughout the Southeast including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Coastal faculty member Amy Tully will be the featured soloist on the flute, playing "Fantasy on When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Tully holds the Certificate of Graduate Study in music performance from the University of South Carolina. She earned her master's degree in musicology from Northwestern University and her bachelor's degree in flute performance from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Tully is a member of the Long Bay Symphony and has been a featured guest soloist at the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach and in the Lake City concert series.
The band is directed by assistant professor of music James L. Tully, who is director of bands at Coastal. The event is part of Coastal's 2005-2006 Cultural Arts Series. For more information, contact the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502.
