February 21, 2006

Step Afrika!, a professional dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, will perform Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The program is free and open to the public.

A collaborative project between young artists from the United States and the South Africa-based Soweto Dance Theatre, Step Afrika! is based in Washington, D.C. The group highlights the African American fraternity and sorority art form of stepping and its link to traditional South African dance.

Critically-acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition’s use as an educational tool for young people worldwide, Step Afrika! has performed in North and South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. The company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS and NPR as well as in numerous books, documentaries and articles that seek to explore the tradition of stepping.

Step Afrika is on its annual 50-city tour of American colleges and universities from Maine to Mississippi.

The performance is sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership. Call 349-2863 for more information.
