‘Oklahoma!’ set to open at Coastal Carolina University

March 15, 2006

Coastal Carolina University Theater will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s celebrated musical “Oklahoma!” from Wednesday, March 22 to Sunday, March 26 at Wheelwright Auditorium.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. March 22 to 25 and at 3 p.m. on March 26. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for 18 and under. Coastal students, faculty and staff are admitted free.

The story, set in the Indian territory on land that would eventually become the state of Oklahoma, is about life and love in a rural community at the beginning of the 20th century. The central strand of the plot concerns the stormy courtship of young lovers Curly and Laurey. The flavor of prairie life is conveyed through the colorful supporting characters, the music and dancing, and the sets.

A smash Broadway hit when it premiered in 1943, this landmark show changed the framework of stage musicals by using music, lyrics and dance to advance, rather than interrupt, the story. The show's classic songs include “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” “Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “Oklahama!”

Performers include: Adam Powell as Curly, Emily Bryant as Laurey, Jessica Leach as Aunt Eller, Matt James as Jud Fry, Trey Gerrald as Will Parker, Brandy Ward as Ado Annie Carnes, Glynn Baker as Ali Hakim, Caitlyn Pollack as Gertie Cummings and Kirk Johnson as Andrew Carnes. All the performers are students. “Oklahoma!” is directed by Greg London, assistant professor of theater, who previously directed “Bat Boy – The Musical” and “Cabaret.”
