Coastal offers junior golf camp at Quail Creek course

June 7, 2006

Young golfers can still sign up for Coastal Carolina University's Junior Golf Camp at the Quail Creek Golf Course June 18 to 22. Tuition is $495 for the week-long day camp, and space is limited.

Youngsters ages 7 to 17 may register for Allen Terrell's Golf Camp, which will feature students from Coastal's Professional Golf Management (PGM) program as counselors. Other instructors will include Brian Ashley, women's golf coach; Chip Weisgerber, head golf professional at Quail Creek; and Charles Johns, assistant golf professional.

In five years, Terrell has taken the CCU golf program to a new level, establishing the Chanticleers as a program to be dealt with on the national level. He has been a three-time Big South Coach of the Year, and the team recently wrapped up its 2005-2006 season at the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive season.

Weisgerber, who earned a business degree from Coastal in 1997, was also head professional at Wachesaw Plantation Club and first assistant golf professional at Sandhill Link Inc. in Myrtle Beach.

Since graduating from Coastal's Professional Golf Management program in 2004, Johns has served as first assistant golf professional at Pine Lakes International Country Club in Myrtle Beach.

Ashley is in his fifth season as the head women's golf coach and assistant men's golf coach at Coastal. A native of Salisbury, N.C., he earned a bachelor's degree in sports management from Pfeiffer University in 1995.

The camp curriculum will include swing instruction with video analysis, how to practice and prepare for tournaments, course management strategy, putting, chipping, pitching and bunker play, plus drills, a study of the rules of golf and 18-hole championships.

The camp is limited to the first 40 applicants. A typical day will run from 8 a.m to 5 p.m., and lunch is included.
