Thirty-five Horry County sixth-graders have been chosen to participate in the second Summer Ethics Academy for Jackson Family Junior Scholars. The four-day camp is scheduled for July 17 to 20 at Coastal Carolina University and is sponsored by Coastal's Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values. The camp seeks to foster students moral development and a sense of moral responsibility.

Camp activities will involve the students in discussions, activities and games addressing ethical dilemmas, character traits and moral principles. There will be recreational activities, and the students will make a presentation on the essential features of moral decision-making and moral responsibility.

The students were chosen by their teachers and principals based on the following criteria: advancement to the sixth grade; well-developed social and communication skills; the potential to serve as a role model to their peers; and an interest in attending the summer academy.

The camp will be co-instructed by Coastal students including:

- Erica Bolin, a junior elementary education from Clover

- Kate Carlier, a junior philosophy major from Portsmouth, N.H., a Jackson Scholar

- Caroline P. Smith, a senior English major from Stafford, Va., a Jackson Scholar

- Zeb Brown, a sophomore biology major from Andres

- Anne Tyson, a junior philosophy major from Rockingham, N.C., a Jackson Scholar

- Brent Harrison, a senior business management major from Columbia

- Jennifer Helms, a senior philosophy major from Jacksonville, Fla.

- Jason Fishel, assistant director of the Jackson Family Center

Each Jackson Scholar is accepted into the program based on a written application and personal interviews with the program staff and Jackson Center Board of Directors. The Jackson scholars attend two years of ethical leadership studies, complete an ethics-based internship, assist during the Summer Ethics Academy and prepare an annual report for the Jackson Family.

Renée Smith, assistant professor of philosophy at Coastal, coordinates and directs the Summer Ethics Academy.

The Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values was founded by Nelson and Mary Emily Platt Jackson and exists to cultivate and promote the importance of personal and professional integrity. Each year, the center sponsors scholarships and visiting scholars and holds public discussion forums on ethical issues.
