This Academy Award-winning film (1980) directed by Hal Ashby follows a childishly naïve gardener (Peter Sellers) who, through a series of chance encounters and misunderstandings, becomes a trusted adviser to a powerful businessman (Melvyn Douglas), becomes romantically involved with the man's wife (Shirley MacLaine) and rises through the political ranks in Washington, D.C.

Following the screening, Michael Ruse, associate professor in CCU's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, will lead a discussion on the nature of irony and the political context of the film as well as a comparison to contemporary politics.
