Enjoy the private collection of nativity scenes displayed at this special time at Mepkin Abbey, originally a rice
plantation purchased by Henry Laurens in 1762. Henry and Clare Boothe Luce bought the property in 1936, built an
extensive landscape garden and used the land for equestrian and hunting activities. In 1949, the Luce family gave
the property to the Trappist Order’s Gethsemani Abbey. Twenty-nine monks came from Gethsemani, Ky., to found
the new Mepkin Abbey that year. Lunch afterwards at the Barony House (lunch not included in the excursion fee).
