Wreckers, Pirates, and Smugglers: From Salvage to Consumption Bookmark and Share

Jan 22

5:15 p.m. @ Johnson Auditorium

As the first lecturer of the Spring 2019 Cultural Heritage Studies Speakers Series, Jamie Goodall, assistant professor of public history at Stevenson University, will discuss piracy and public history. Goodall’s work shifts Caribbean piracy from the social, economic and legal margins of the Caribbean world to the center of it. She examines pirates and the stealing, selling and buying of commodities within the broader history of early modern consumption and colonial expansion. Through the commodities and labor that pirates brought to the Caribbean islands, Goodall argues that economies of opportunity emerged, which fueled the growth of a larger Atlantic economy.
