Lecture: I'm not Leaving: Witnessing the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda Bookmark and Share

Mar 25

5 p.m. @ Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116
Free and open to the public

Carl Wilkens shares his story of living through the genocide that swept through Rwanda in 1994. Though his family returned to safety in America at the outset of the violence, Wilkens chose to stay in Kigali, venturing out each day into streets filled with mortars and gunfire as he worked with Rwandan colleagues to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. Wilkens’ book I’m Not Leaving (2011) traces his motivation and experiences during the period, as well as a 40-minute documentary of the same name (2011). For more than a decade, Wilkens has been sharing his story around the globe to inspire and equip people to “enter the world of “The Other.”
