Kevin DeLapp, Harold E. Fleming Chair of Philosophy and coordinator of the philosophy program at Converse College, presents a lecture on Confucianism through a moral and ethical lens. Confucianism urges us to give greater moral consideration to people with whom we have special relationships. Such partiality is in tension with the dominant approaches in Western ethics, which recommend universal and impartial moral standards. DeLapp will explore such questions as, can Confucian favoritism be a legitimate ethical stance in the modern world? Can we give more moral consideration to some people than others while avoiding favoritism and prejudice?
