CeTEAL: Feminist Pedagogy: How to Create an Empowering Classroom Bookmark and Share

Apr 15

11 a.m. @ KRNS 210
Free but registration required

Feminist pedagogy strives to create a non-hierarchical, non-judgmental, collaborative classroom. In this session, we will analyze how distributing power can foster student participation and retention. We will look in detail at a number of ways to incorporate students’ lived experiences into the classroom, to become aware of instructor privilege and biases, and to offer a platform for marginalized voices. While not all of the approaches mentioned will work for every classroom, this workshop will offer pedagogical techniques for all instructors.

Participants in this session will learn how to:
• Employ principles of feminist and liberation pedagogy in their classrooms;
• Create assignments and a classroom atmosphere that decentralizes power, supports critical thinking skills, and validates students’ experiences;
• Better accommodate the needs of first-generation and non-traditional students.
