7 p.m. to 7 a.m. @ CCU track

It is estimated that about 1 million people living in the United States receive treatments in relation to cancer every year. There are many different types of cancer, but each is just as poisonous as the next. 569, 490 people are expected to die from cancer this year. This is 1,500 people a day. For the first time ever, cancer will be the number one leading cause of death in the United States. However, Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), a student organization on campus, is hoping to reverse this trend by planning numerous cancer awareness and fundraising events, including Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is the largest nationwide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is a yearlong movement that focuses on a 12-hour event that celebrates the lives of cancer survivors, commemorates loved ones lost, and fights back against the disease.

In past years, Coastal Carolina University has been a top fundraiser for Relay. Last year CCU was ranked 6th in the nation for most money raised per cap, as well as succeeding in passing the set goal of $75,000 by $13,000. This year we would like to gain more participants to help us break records at Relay For Life, scheduled for April 8 at the CCU track from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

CCU is looking to get more faculty and staff involved in the mission of Relay For Life through team recruitment. Being on a team is not only a great way to get involved and help raise funds for this amazing cause, but it’s also fun. Each team created will have its own team captain who will meet with all other team captains five times this semester to get new information about the event as well as coming together to share fun and unique ideas.

If you have any further questions or would like to set up a meeting, contact: Nikki Brown, the team recruitment chair, at jnbrown@g.coastal.edu. To start a team, visit the website: www.relayforlife.org/ccusc.
