In October 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyo., and left to die. Five weeks later, Moises Kaufman and fellow members of New York City’s Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, where they conducted more than 200 interviews with townspeople. From those interviews they wrote the play "The Laramie Project," a chronicle of the life of the town in the year after the murder. A reviewer for the Associated Press calls it “astonishing. Not since 'Angels in America' has a play attempted so much: nothing less than an examination of the American psyche at the end of the millennium.”
