St. Anthony, Poverty & the Origins of Christian Monasticism

    Jeffry Halverson
    Wednesday, April 16, 4:30 p.m.
    Lackey Chapel

Professor Jeffry R. Halverson will discuss Christian views on poverty by focusing on the figure of St. Anthony the Great, a fourth century Egyptian ascetic recognized as the “father” of Christian monasticism. Famed for his life of humility and isolation in the inhospitable Egyptian desert, St. Anthony reveals a great deal about the role of poverty in Christian devotional life.
