Foreign Language Placement Test
FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM AND RETROACTIVE CREDIT: WHY IT IS TO YOUR BENEFIT TO TAKE IT!
If you have prior experience in French, German, Spanish, or Russian you are strongly encouraged to take a foreign language placement exam. Students who have taken two or more years of these languages in high school or have spoken them in their families can place into a course beyond the first-semester level and receive FREE CREDIT for the lower level courses after having completed 1-2 classes in the language with a grade of C or better. Students will receive between 5 and 11 hours of retroactive credit, depending on their placement. These credits count towards graduation and can also be applied to a minor in French, German, or Spanish!
[Please note that retroactive credit is available to students in Italian as well, but you must contact the Chair of the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies for more information: Gary Schmidt at email@example.com]
Students who complete a foreign language minor have a competitive edge over many other applicants on the job market. A minor in French, German, or Spanish can be paired with any major on campus to increase your marketability and provide evidence to employers that you can work in a global, multicultural environment.
HOW DO I TAKE THE EXAM?
Go to the Foreign Language Instructional Center website at coastal.edu/flic and click on the explorer box “Take the Placement Test.” You will need your Coastal Carolina University student username and pin to take the exam.
Search for your Coastal University Username and Pin: coastal.edu/search/password
You should allow yourself approximately 30-45 minutes to complete the exam. Please do not use outside resources. Remember to print a copy of your scores. The test should be taken only once. The test is available online in French, German, Spanish and Russian languages only.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR BEST AND NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE RESOURCES (INCLUDING PEOPLE):
Only an accurate score on the test will allow us to put you into the course that is appropriate for your level. If you are placed into a class that is beyond your skill level you will not be successful and not receive a grade sufficient to obtain the retroactive credit.
If you deliberately perform on the exam at a level below your actual capabilities you will be placed in a course in which you will not be able to improve your language proficiency significantly and you will earn less or no retroactive credit.
