Phase 2: Hang Out with Your Academic Advisor

This phase of the New C.H.A.N.T. Experience is designed for incoming students to receive their class schedule, meet with their academic advisor, ask questions and get to know their future classmates.

Once you complete your Online Orientation, click on the link in the Items of Interest section (***Move onto Phase 2) in order to complete the evaluation. Freshmen and transfer students with less than 18 credit hours will then be able to complete their class preferences worksheet. Transfer students with more than 18 credit hours will be directed to contact their Fall 2020 academic advisors (PDF) in order to get registered for classes.

For our freshmen and transfers with less than 18 credit hours, an academic advisor will build you a Fall 2020 class schedule using your preferences form. They will also reach out to you within five to ten business days to schedule a group advising video conference call. During this call, you will learn more about the advising process, why you were placed into the classes on your schedule, and meet other incoming students who have a similar major as you.

This phase of the New C.H.A.N.T. Experience began on Monday, April 13 and will continue throughout the summer.

We kindly ask that family members refrain from participating as we have designed an academic advising session with Q&A in the future just for you.

These virtual advising sessions will not be your only chance to connect with other incoming students throughout the summer. You will have multiple other opportunities during Phase 3: Ask your OL sessions.

Note: If you require a disability accommodation to access the hybrid New C.H.A.N.T. Experience (orientation), please contact disability@coastal.edu a minimum one 1 week prior to the event.

Responses to FAQs

How do I set up my virtual appointment with an academic advisor?

For freshmen and transfers with less than 18 earned credit hours post-high school graduation: Your academic advisor will reach out to you within 5-10 business days of completing your class preferences worksheet to schedule a group advising appointment with you.

For transfer with 18 or more earned credit hours post-high school graduation: Once you complete your online orientation evaluation, you will be directed to website where you can locate the contact information for your academic advisor. We recommend using email at this time as nearly all faculty and staff are working remotely.

How do I reschedule my Virtual Advising session?

You should contact the academic advisor who initially contacted you to schedule the appointment. If you are unable to locate that information, you can contact the Office of New Student and Family Programs at orientation@coastal.edu, and we will assist you with determining that information.

What if I do not have access to a laptop, smart phone, or stable internet?

Please contact the Office of New Student and Family Programs directly at orientation@coastal.edu or 843-349-2027. We will do everything we can to make the necessary accommodations.

How do I prepare for my individual advising appointment?

Make sure you review the online orientation section regarding the core curriculum and have all AP/IB and dual enrollment credit information ready. During your appointment, you will want access to a quiet space, internet/wifi, and a computer, tablet, or phone. If you will not have access to this type of technology, please include that information on your class preferences worksheet.

We kindly ask that family members refrain from participating as we have designed an academic advising session with questions and answers for them in the future.

What can I expect during my advising appointment?

Coastal Carolina takes academic advising seriously. You can expect a group experience with an academic advisor who will introduce you to the curriculum in your program of choice as well as the advising process. Your academic advisor will provide you with your Fall 2020 class schedule and discuss how to make changes to that schedule, should you need to.

What if I’m not familiar with how to register for courses? Will there be additional support for me during this time?

Additional resources will be provided to all students prior and during each phase of the New C.H.A.N.T. Experience. Please continue to monitor your email for details.

How long will my advising appointment last?

Appointments will last no more than an hour depending on the college and specific degree requirements.

Can I have a family member or guest with me during the advising appointment?

We kindly ask that family members refrain from participating as we have designed an academic advising session with questions and answers for them in the future.
