Online and Hybrid Learning

While hybrid and online classes both have some of the same elements, there are some distinct differences between the two. A hybrid course is designed to integrate face-to-face and online activities so they reinforce and complement each other rather than treating the online component as a secondary web resource or duplicate what is taught in the classroom. Courses that are designated "hybrid" provide 51-99 percent of collective course instruction online. Online courses are taught 100 percent online and do not require any face-to-face meetings.


Academic Continuity (PDF) - Coastal Carolina University strives to maintain academic continuity when normal academic activities are disrupted. While natural disruptions may encroach on a faculty’s ability to teach, the Coastal Office of Online Learning has provided digital solutions to assist with class restructuring and make-up activities. Resources include Moodle, Office 365, Echo 360, and Skype for Business. If you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact coastalonline@coastal.edu

Academic Integrity - With every class there are various assessments which range among Diagnostic, Formative, and Summative. The approach by which these assessments are administered are as varied as the students' approach to completing them. By recognizing the levels of assessment and how they are categorized by degree of importance, a list of best practices can then be implemented among the participants in hybrid and online courses to maintain academic integrity. Faculty Best Practices Guide for Online/Hybrid Courses (PDF) - This guide is designed to be a reference for all faculty and teaching associates. It answers some of the frequently asked questions from CCU faculty. For more specific questions that are not covered in this guide, please reach out to COOL directly, or contact your Chair or College Dean.

Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Campus Membership - The Coastal Office of Online Learning is proud to sponsor Coastal Carolina University's membership to the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). As a member of OLC, all CCU faculty and staff can now take advantage of great benefits and privileges. Included, is full use of the interactive OLC Quality Scorecard, which provides criteria and benchmarking tools for evaluating your online, hybrid or flex course or program.

Our membership allows access to a number of free webinars and panel discussions on online higher education topics. There are also significant opportunities for peer networking with an international community of online learning educators, and early access to research and trends in online learning. Both faculty and staff are encouraged to take advantage of all materials and opportunities available to assist with course enhancement, best practices and innovations for online teaching.
