Alternative Break Experiences

It is the vision of Break Away to create a society of active citizens. At CCU, we do our part in helping our students become active citizens in their communities of proximity and affinity.

An Alternative Break is a week long trip where students engage in direct service focused around a particular social justice issue. Alternative Breaks are broken into several parts: Pre-trip, Service Trip , and Post-Trip Reflection. During the pre-trip, students are educated about their social issue and the Active Citizen Continuum in order to be fully prepared for their service experience. During the service trip, students participate in hands-on work with multiple community orginizations related to the social issue. Post-trip reflection offers the students a chance to think about their week of service as well as, consider future actions and decisions that can further help their communities with prevalent social issues.

Coastal Carolina is a proud associate member Break Away. Break Away is a national non-profit that supports Alternative Break Experiences to college students throughout the year.

Site Leader Positions

Successful Alternative Break trips require a lot of planning and organization and their are several leadership positions available for those interested in seeing a different side of Alternative Break Trips. Two site leaders are needed to help facilitate each alternative break, they communicate with host sites, facilitate reflections, pre-trip meetings, and reorientation after the service trip. In exchange for taking on this role, Site Leaders go on the Alternative Break trip at no cost. Applications for Site Leader Positions can be found on our Civic Engagement Coastal Connections page under Forms.
