The heart of Teal Nation

July 20, 2016

Dear students, faculty and staff,

I am writing to you to express my feelings about the recent events of violence that have occurred in the streets and communities of America and in cities around the world.

To say that these are challenging times would be an understatement. It seems that every day we are hearing about violent acts that rob the lives of others. No matter what your cultural background, no matter where you call home, no matter what your personal beliefs are, you are impacted by national and global events. This weighs heavy in my thoughts.

We are all personally responsible for defining the future and for coming together in productive ways.

I am mindful that you may have been personally affected by these tragic incidents and may be in need of acknowledgment and help. Know that Coastal Carolina University is also your home, and help is available here. This is the very heart of TealNation.

As the new academic year approaches, we will communicate the actions we are taking to continue building Coastal into an even stronger community that is grounded in the principles of accepting differences and engaging in relevant dialogues that promote healing and positive solutions.

Teal Nation must be ever-evolving, and both proactive and responsive to the dynamically changing world around us. This is only possible when we understand we are all personally responsible for defining the future and for coming together in productive ways to make this chosen future our reality.

Please pay close attention to communications in the coming weeks and months, and I look forward to our interactions in the upcoming semester.

David A. DeCenzo, Ph.D.
