Biochemistry is on the interface between the chemical and biological universe, with particular attention paid to the study of life. A Bachelor of Science in biochemistry – a unique major that spans two very exciting disciplines – will provide a student with the chemical understanding of the biological world that surrounds us. Students in this major will take introductory and advanced courses in both the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biology.
A degree in biochemistry prepares students for a wide variety of post-graduate programs (M.S., Ph.D., M.D., D.O., and D.D.S.) such as graduate programs in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, or medical or dental school.
The Student Experience
- Biochemistry is a unique major that spans two very exciting disciplines. A degree in biochemistry will prepare you for a wide variety of graduate programs in chemistry, biology or biochemistry or professional schools of pharmacy, medical, or dental school.
- Students will have an opportunity to work with faculty on independent research programs. Recent topics include viruses, prions, and enzyme kinetics.
- Coastal Carolina University’s unique biochemistry degree affords students the opportunity to take certain upper-level courses so they can custom tailor their degrees to the careers they wish to pursue, allowing students to be more competitive.
- The state-of-the-art instrumentation and laboratory techniques provide valuable tools for students as they pursue their careers.
Beyond the Classroom
Biochemistry majors go on to careers in a variety of areas including: basic research; medicine; food science; pharmaceuticals; quality control; biotechnology; bioinformatics; teaching; forensics; and dentistry.
