Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers both a major and a minor in psychology, as well as concentrations in behavioral neuroscience and forensics. It also services a gerontology certificate program.
A major in psychology offers students a thorough foundation in research design and data analysis. In addition, psychology majors will have the opportunity to study the major content areas in psychology, including the basic principles of learning, experimental psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and areas in abnormal and clinical psychology. Graduates with the Bachelor of Science in psychology often seek employment with mental health and social service agencies. In addition, many psychology majors pursue graduate degrees to prepare for careers in teaching, research, counseling and consulting.
Students are offered extensive and varied opportunities for integrative experiential learning, including faculty/student collaborative research and community-based internships.
The Student Experience
Internships are an excellent way for students to gain real-word experiences with agencies, organizations, and businesses to apply psychological principles and knowledge. Students who major in psychology will participate in an out-of-classroom internship experience related to the field of psychology. Upon completion of the internship experience students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge gained from the Internship experience in the field of psychology.
- Apply psychological principles related to the Internship experience in the field of psychology.
Typically, students complete 33 hours for the internship per credit hour (100 hours=3 credits). The experiential nature of an internship requires that students adhere rigorously to attendance guidelines. The final grade for the internship will be determined by the requirements specified in the written contract. Weekly or biweekly updates and written assignments may be required.
