Boat Operations and Facilities

Information

Welcome to Boat Operations and Facilities supporting education and research in the Gupta College of Science. Our fleet of vessels, generally stored or docked at Georgetown, S.C., includes boats ranging from small aluminum jon boats and fiberglass skiffs suited for shallow waters to a 50-foot aluminum boat, the Coastal Explorer, equipped with geophysical survey equipment. This fleet is available for use by classes, faculty, and graduate students, and may also be chartered by outside researchers (for charter inquiries email rviso@coastal.edu). Operation and maintenance of the fleet are administered by staff, all of which hold Captain’s licenses and have extensive marine navigation and safety experience.

Boat operations are based in Georgetown at 909 Front Street. The facility includes classrooms, storage, a dock, and direct access to Winyah Bay and the Waccamaw River. Winyah Bay is the fourth-largest estuary on the east coast and provides numerous opportunities for coastal studies. In addition, CCU faculty and students make use of numerous inlets, salt marshes, freshwater rivers, and wetlands comprising the coast of northeast South Carolina. Research collaboration opportunities also occur at the nearby Baruch Institute located at North Inlet.
