Students in the nationally-recognized Physical Education Program learn the art and science of teaching movement to PreK-12 students through laboratory, research and field experiences. They learn theory and principles of human movement in the areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and motor behavior. Students develop and analyze fundamental motor, fitness and sport skills necessary to model, deliver and assess quality instruction. Students learn best practices in teaching through a sequential program of pedagogical skill development, which culminates in teaching licensure.v
The Student Experience
- The Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences is nationally accredited by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) and the South Carolina Board of Education. The Physical Education Program is nationally recognized by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America).
- The Physical Education program prepares students to obtain a South Carolina state licensure to teach school-based physical education in grades PreK-12. Graduates of this program are qualified to deliver developmentally-appropriate physical activity programs for children at elementary, middle and secondary levels.
- The program provides a series of progressive field-based experiences and culminates in a full semester of teaching physical education under the supervision of University and school faculty. Students in the program gain over 100 hours of guided clinical experiences in local schools prior to the capstone student teaching internship.
- The program prepares graduates primarily for quality PreK-12 physical education instruction in South Carolina's public schools. However, students are also well-prepared to pursue other degree programs.
- Within their academic programs, students are encouraged to pursue minors and electives that will increase their marketability and support their interests in areas such as fitness, coaching, special education and health education.
- CCU offers two student organizations for education majors: The South Carolina Education Association Club (SCEA) and the national education honor society, Kappa Delta Pi (KDP).
Admission to the Program
All students enter the program as pre-majors. Candidates may complete a formal application for admission to the professional program in teacher education (PPTE) when they have completed at least 60 hours of college level coursework and have met the following requirements:
- Earn at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA;
- Earn a “C” or better in ENGL 101, ENGL 102 or ENGL 211, EDUC 111, EDUC 204 and EDPE 215;
- Pass all three areas of Praxis Core or meet the exemption policy;
- Successfully clear a criminal background check;
- Complete a Professional Reference; and
- Candidates are reviewed for acceptance by the Portal I Faculty Committee.
Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) club is one of the oldest student organizations in the Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences. Membership is open to all students enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Education program and welcomes new members. Members of the club attend conferences and participate in fundraising activities, service projects and other community events.
PETE club members attend South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference each November. At this conference, students from all across the state attend several interactive and content knowledge sessions and compete on the beach in the annual future professional “Superstars” competition. PETE also plays an active role in mentoring ‘at risk’ youth within the local schools. The physical activities for the Dalton and Linda Floyd “Teal Youth Day” held on campus each semester are orchestrated by Physical Education students.
