On-Campus Living
Freshman LIFE Students
- Live on-campus in a typical freshman residence
- Have live-in residential peer supports
- Are working on navigating campus, and becoming involved in the social aspects of being a college student
- This includes club membership, sporting events, and volunteering in the community
Sophomore LIFE Students
- Live in University owned, apartment-style housing, off of main campus
- Use the campus shuttle to get to main campus
- Have live-in or live-near residential supports based on their individual needs
- Continue to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities (required)
- Have experiential learning opportunities that include:
- Meal planning and grocery shopping
- Food safety and appropriate food storage and handling
- Kitchen safety and cooking
- Cleaning and apartment maintenance
- Budgeting
Junior LIFE Students
- May continue to live in University owned, apartment-style housing with or without live-in supports
- Have experiential learning opportunities in the residential setting
- May have opportunities to live on or off campus with friends, and without residential supports (decisions based on assessment data, and student safety)
- Continue to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities (required)
Senior LIFE Students
- May continue to live in University owned, apartment-style housing with or without live-in supports
- Have experiential learning opportunities in the residential setting – if needed
- May have opportunities to live on or off campus with friends, and without residential supports (decisions based on assessment data, and student safety)
- Continue to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities (required)
All LIFE Students
- Receive social support through a structured mentoring/tutoring program
- May participate in most campus activities, groups, or events that are open to other non-degree seeking students on campus. Participation in a wide variety of extracurricular activities is required;
- Have social mentors to assist them in identifying activities and groups that match their interests and often accompany them to events
- Because LIFE students are non-degree-seeking, they are ineligible to participate in NCAA sanctioned varsity athletics
Specially Designed Instruction
Independent Living
- Daily living skills, self-determination, and interpersonal skills are enhanced through:
- Classroom instruction
- Daily engagement in campus life, activities, and social interactions
- Experiential learning in their residence halls.
- Assessment scores are used to determine students’ current level of knowledge and to design instruction focusing on individual student goals.
- One-on-one or small group instruction in reading, consumer math, and health advocacy.
Career Development
- The LIFE Program provides a Career Curriculum designed to help individuals master the work readiness skills they need to be successful in a changing workplace.
- Students receive classroom instruction along with real-life experience through volunteer, paid, and unpaid internship opportunities.
- Seniors in the LIFE Program have the opportunity to participate in full-time internships in inclusive settings
- The internship is a one-year employment preparation program that takes place entirely at the workplace
- Total workplace immersion facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training through worksite rotations
- The program culminates in individualized job development
- Employment outcomes for LIFE Interns
- 2020/2021: 87.5% in integrated employment
- 2021/2022: 100% in integrated employment
