Literacy Add-On Certifications

The Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences offers the coursework licensed educators may use to apply for add-on certification by the South Carolina Department of Education for Literacy Teacher and Literacy Coach. The coursework provides an in-depth study of literacy foundations and assessment, coaching, teaching methods, curriculum development, and supervision of reading programs.

‌Literacy Teacher Add-on Certification

To apply for the Literacy Teacher certification, the South Carolina State Department of Education has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Initial or professional certification at the early childhood, elementary, middle, secondary, or K-12 level
  • Minimum qualifying score(s) on the content area examination(s) required by the State Board of Education
  • Two years of successful teaching experience
  • Specialized preparation - graduate courses as shown below‌

  • EDLL 600: Advanced Reading Theory: Philosophical, Historical, and Sociological Foundations of Reading (3 hours)

  • EDLL 604: Practicum in Literacy Assessment and Evaluation* (3 hours)
    Offered Fall, Spring
  • EDLL 616 (for EC/Elem)* (3 hours)
    Offered Spring, Summer 2

    EDLL 617: Content Literacy (middle/secondary)* (3 hours)

  • EDLL 608: Instructional Strategies and Materials in Literacy* (3 hours)

Literacy Coach Add-on Certification

To apply for the Literacy Coach certification, the South Carolina State Department of Education has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Initial or professional certification at the early childhood, elementary, middle, secondary, or K-12 level
  • Minimum qualifying score(s) on the content area examination(s) required by the State Board of Education
  • Five years of successful teaching experience
  • 12 Semester hours of courses required for the Literacy Teacher certification
  • Specialized preparation – graduate courses shown below
