Skills to Lead - Veterans Career Transition Program

The Skills to Lead - Veterans Career Transition Program consists of a two-hour orientation, five development modules of 1.5 hours each, and culminates in two hours of one-on-one coaching. Paiticipating veterans are recruited from the Office of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Alumni Association. Retired military enrolled at CCU would also be eligible as well as spouses of active military members and veterans. Other organizations that will partner with CCU in recruiting and publicizing the Boeing Skills to Lead program include the CCU Office of Veterans Services, Horry-Georgetown Technical College Veterans Affairs, the CCU Veterans Alumni Association, Department of Veterans Affairs - Myrtle Beach VA Outpatient Clinic, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce Development - S.C. Works, Horry County Veterans Affairs, and American Legion Post 196. During the program, participants will receive the latest information about techniques to succeed as a leader, practice the applications of techniques through case study and role play, and discuss how to transfer learned skills to the civilian workplace. Specific modules include: Understanding leadership, understanding yourself; using power and influence; negotiating; performance management; and working in teams.

The program is highly individualized and includes a detailed self-assessment of one's own leadership strengths and weaknesses, the establishment of a personal development plan, and personalized coaching so that veterans will be able to understand how their cache of skills will translate to different settings. Facilitators include experts in both veterans' transition to the civilian workforce as well as experts in organizational leadership. Participants who successfully complete the entire Boeing Skills to Lead - Veterans Career Transition Program will be awarded a TEAL belt in Leadership from the Executive Development Programs at CCU. After awarding of the TEAL belt, program graduates will have access to additional services through the Office of Career Services at CCU.

CCU has a strong history in the Skills to Lead Program led by Barbara A. Ritter, Ph.D., vice president for executive development and career services, and dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. Ritter has made more than 70 publications and presentations on leadership, justice and business ethics, and has consulting experience in the areas of diversity and equal employment opportunity, organizational culture, human resource policies, employee satisfaction, selection and promotion, performance appraisal and development, and data collection and analysis. She has worked with a variety of profit and nonprofit organizations locally and across the nation.

About the Program

The Skills to Lead -- Veterans Career Transition program will assist veterans (or active-duty if applicable), plus active duty and veteran spouses, individualized career transition development opportunities.

The program consists of a two-hour orientation, five development modules of 1.5 hours each, and culminates in two hours of one-on-one coaching. The majority of sessions will occur on the Coastal Carolina University Conway campus, although remote locations in Myrtle Beach and Georgetown are also possible on an as-needed basis. Participants are recruited from the Office of Veterans Services and the Veterans Alumni Association. Other organizations that will partner with CCU in recruiting and publicizing the program include the CCU Office of Veterans Services, Horry-Georgetown Technical College Veterans Affairs, the CCU Veterans Alumni Association, Department of Veterans Affairs -- Myrtle Beach VA Outpatient Clinic, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce Development -- S.C. Works, Ho1zy County Veterans Affairs and local and regional American Legion Posts. There will be four cohorts of 15 participants each, for a total of 60 participants.
