Bachelor of Fine Arts
Designed to prepare future musical theater actors for a professional career, this interdisciplinary degree concentrates on building and honing skills required for a life in the theater. The program offers structured, intensive, studio-based training in genres including musical comedy, musical drama, “Broadway opera,” cabaret, revue and new and alternative forms of musical theater. The goal of the program is to cultivate working artists with practical knowledge and competence that includes sensitivity to technique, artistry and style as well as insight into the larger role of theater arts.
What You Will Study
You will gain technique training in acting complemented by training in vocal revue, musicianship, dance and the study of the repertoire of musical theater in print and recordings. You will also train through rehearsal and performance.
The department has an aggressive production schedule that includes five main stage productions (typically two musicals) each academic year. In addition, students produce at least two shows each year. Coastal Carolina University offers two state-of-the-art theaters including the Edwards Theatre (flexible black box) and Wheelwright Auditorium (720-seat proscenium). B.F.A. performance students are required to participate in a production, as determined by faculty. All students are evaluated annually and must meet professional standards to earn the B.F.A. Musical Theatre degree. Musical theater majors will audition to participate in the CCU Senior Showcase, performed in the spring of their senior year.
