LunaFest features novelist Dorothea Benton Frank
WIPL hosts benefit for Family Justice Center expansion
Novelist Dorothea Benton Frank Best-selling Lowcountry novelist Dorothea Benton Frank is the featured speaker for Lunafest on Thursday, Sept. 29, in the James J. Johnson Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. Lunafest is a traveling film festival featuring award-winning short, independent films by, for and about women.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased through the Family Justice Center of Georgetown and Horry counties, sponsor of the event. Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for Coastal Carolina University (WIPL) is hosting the event.
A reception with hors d'oeuvres begins at 6 p.m., followed by Frank's remarks at 7 p.m., with the feature film previews shown at 7:45 p.m. Frank's remarks will concern domestic violence in reference to her novel "The Hurricane Sisters" (2014), which deals with that issue. She also will talk about her new book, "All Summer Long." Everyone who attends the event will receive a copy of her new book.
Frank was born and raised on Sullivan's Island. Her bestselling Lowcountry Tales Series includes the novels "Sullivan's Island" and "Plantation." Her titles "Porch Lights," "The Last Original Wife" and "The Hurricane Sisters" made The New York Times bestseller lists in 2014 and 2015.
A sampling of four films will be screened at Lunafest. Titles of the films are not yet available, but only a short preview of each film will be shown.
The Family Justice Center of Georgetown and Horry counties works with local agencies to provide comprehensive coordinated services to victims of domestic violence and educational programs for the community. The center's mission is to reduce injuries and deaths resulting from domestic violence. Proceeds from Lunafest will help support an expansion of their services into Horry County.
