The Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® is a program of the Winyah Rivers Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to protect, preserve, monitor and revitalize the health of the lands and water of the greater Winyah Bay watershed. Through the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Program, we educate and advocate for the protection of the Waccamaw River Watershed. We engage the local community as watchdogs and community stewards of this important local resource that provides drinking water, recreational opportunities, habitat for important plant and animal life and aesthetic beauty for our families and our future.
Since 2005, the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Program office has been located at Coastal Carolina University's Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies. The Center has a Memorandum of Understanding with Winyah Rivers Foundation to support joint interests in community education and outreach as it relates to watershed education, science and management. To that end, the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® staff works closely with the Waccamaw Watershed Academy staff to engage the community, including the University community, in watershed stewardship through a number of programs including the Waccamaw River Volunteer Monitoring Project.
