ENGR 396 - Engineering Professional Development Hours (1-10 credits) (Prereq: Permission of instructor and approved contract) Students complete supervised professional development and enhancement activities, working 50 hours during a semester for each credit hour enrolled. These activities include but are not limited to: education and research abroad, co-operative education, professional training and/or certification, service learning, and other approved opportunities. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Professional development hours are necessary for continued registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.). As a result, the Engineering Science Program requires all majors to complete Professional Enhancement co-curricular activities such as education and research abroad, co-operative education, professional training and/or certification, and service learning. This course streamlines the process of enrolling students, assessing their performance as well as appropriating credit towards graduation requirements.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Existing academic programs will not be impacted unless engineering majors seek to satisfy this requirement by enrolling in a certificate program offered on campus – in which case that program will net positive.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

As indicated above, cost is priced into an existing position that handles professional enhancement opportunities.
