HIST 378 - History of the American Dream (3 Credits) This course examines the origins and development of the idea of the American Dream. The course researches the history of memory in the project of defining American national identity particularly over contested notions of liberty and equality. Topics might include the history of entrepreneurship and political economy, the history of consumerism and consumer activism, the history of workers and the labor movement, and the history of immigration and migration history. F, S, M, SU.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This course provides students another offering in United States History that is currently not available in the course options. The course is directly related to a faculty member's research and field. Students routinely request more courses that engage the idea of equal opportunity in U.S. history.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Could be counted as a United States History course for the History major or minor. It will provide students with another U.S. History upper division history course. It will afford the students the opportunity to learn the history of such a central concept in American Identity: the American Dream. This history engages the idea of equal opportunity, debates about American identity, and struggles of inclusion.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

Rotation within existing faculty schedule; alternate with an array of contemporary U.S. history courses.
