ARTS 102 - Visual Arts and Culture (3 credits): An introductory course in visual language and literacy. The course will include a brief history and overview of art and design and will also examine the cultural, political and social aspects of art.

Proposed catalog description, in the present tense, including prefix, number, title, (credits), (prerequisites), (co-requisites), course description, and semesters offered. Catalog description should be exactly as it is to appear in the catalog.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Discussions with Daphne Holland have suggested many incoming freshmen, specifically CEaL and CINO Accelerate students, are eager to make art as a form of expression, but feel that there is no room in their curriculum to allow for that experience. This course for non-majors was typically approached through "hands-on" instruction, but the current course description does not make the approach apparent to students. As well, ARTS 102 already has a lab fee associated with it for art supplies underscoring the applied instruction therein. The majority of courses satisfying Core Goal IID do not emphasize art-making, so by adding this course to the core (through a separate curricular action) and by highlighting its instructional methods, this course can meet the interests of those students.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

No other program should be negatively impacted as the department will not be able to offer more than a couple of these classes/semester. This will only serve a small subset of freshmen who are more interested in making art as a form of artistic expression and, therefore, should not undermine other classes in Core II D.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

This ARTS course already has a lab fee associated with it. Available instructors will teach course.
