Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

We have changed the student learning outcomes for the degree to place greater emphasis on interdisciplinarity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Assessment of student capstone presentations has indicated that while they are able to utilize research methods related to one distinct discipline, they need additional experience with integrating insights from multiple disciplines. Removing the requirement that students take MALS*650 allows them to take an additional elective and explore a broader range of disciplines in their graduate work. In addition, recent feedback from students has suggested that their experience with the content of MALS*650 was less relevant than the introduction to interdisciplinarity and diversity offered in MALS*600. In addition, the writing component of MALS*650 replicated some of the work required of students in MALS*700, which will continue to be a required course in the program.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

None. COMM has dropped MALS*650 from its Masters Degree requirements and will no longer offer support to teach the class.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

We are dropping one course and replacing with an additional elective. There are sufficient graduate electives available currently to accommodate MALS students.
