MATH 490 - Seminar in Mathematics (3 credits) (Prereq: completion of 21 hours in mathematics in courses numbered 150 or above) This is a course on communicating mathematics. Students will be expected to explore mathematical ideas with a faculty mentor, and present these ideas to an audience of faculty and students. F. F.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The course as it currently runs is very content heavy. For years it has been a challenge to get the students through practicing practical job and presentations skills as well as research activities. We are splitting the course into two different semesters: Math 390 for two credits in the spring and Math 490 for one credit in the fall. Math 390 will focus on job searches, resume building, and preparing multiple technical papers and presentations. Math 490 will only be the research component with a faculty mentor and is to be taken after Math 390.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The overall impact on the program will be negligible. The number of credits will remain the same with the work being split over two semesters. The impact on the students should be positive. This will give them more time to practice job and presentations skills and a more in-depth research experience with their faculty mentor.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

The number of credits and work will remain the same, simply divided between two semesters.
