Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Diversity and inclusion are an integral part of the strategic initiatives for Coastal Carolina University, the Wall College of Business Administration, and the Department of Management and Decision Sciences. In the management curriculum, we are preparing students to work effectively in organizations which includes managing a myriad of interpersonal relationships and the differences they represent. Furthermore, given the social justice issues reflecting in society at large that invariably are reflected in workplace experiences, students are requesting this course to enhance their preparation for the workforce.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This course would be open to all students in the CCU community but serves a specific purpose in the management curriculum as a selective course that prepares management students for their respective profession. It also serves as an area for enhanced business knowledge and skill development in the business curriculum and other university students seeking to enhance their interpersonal relationship management.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

There are no associated costs for this course other than course materials associated with a textbook and other reading materials.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

This course will be offered as a rotation in the instructor's teaching schedule and not as an overload. This course would be offered in alternating schedule with other Management courses delivered to reflect an expanded selective of course offerings to support the business curricula. It is anticipated that this course be offered in spring semesters, though the delivery may also include fall and summer rotations.

Any additional information

This course is being taught as an experimental course in the Spring 2022 term and the majority of enrolled students are management majors, with a few non-business majors. The early feedback from students from the first five weeks of the term are three-fold: (1) the course represents new knowledge that has not been addressed in other courses, (2) the skill-building component of the course is challenging but needed for their future success, and (3) the opportunity to engage in sensitive topics and conversation in a safe setting has been instrumental for their overall growth. This course is designed to be experiential and discussion-focused to allow active engagement by all students.
