Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The Pre-Health Professions Concentration in the Public Health Major is being removed to enable the development of a Pre-Health Professions Minor, which, if approved, would be available to Public Health majors as well as non-Public Health majors across campus. This concentration was popular for students in the Public Health program (more than half of new students entering the major selected this option for their concentration), who were particularly interested in attending health professions schools, such as those for Physician Assistants, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The main impact of removing the concentration will be felt in the Public Health program; however, we would transfer students interested in the Pre-Health Professions Concentration, over to the Pre-Health Professions Minor, that is being proposed. It is anticipated that students other than non-science majors interested in the Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and Occupational Therapy routes, may use the proposed minor as a first step to fulfilling their pre-requisites by taking the minor.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

At this time there is no additional financial cost with the removal of this degree concentration. A minor is being submitted in its place.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

There would be a net 0 change in cost with the removal of the concentration but proposing the addition of a minor.

Any additional information

The removal of the concentration is occurring simultaneously with the proposal of minor. A program modification proposal form is being developed for the S.C. Commission on Higher Education (CHE) to remove the concentration to coincide with this removal request through the Academic Affairs process.
