LIS 372 (=ENGL*372) Special Topics in Russian Literature (3) (Prereq: ENGL*102). This course examines literature from Russia and its borderlands (including Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Caucasus) with an emphasis on the interrelationships between literature, folklore, history, and culture. The English Department, which is why we are requesting the cross-listing with the existing course in the English Department taught by Dr. Oldfield. The cross-listing is be submitted with her approval and the approval of English Department Chair.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This course meets the needs of students majoring or minoring in LIS, as well as students in new regional area studies minors (e.g. European Studies). It is part of an effort to expand interdisciplinary engagement across departments that will benefit students who wish to work in professionals where intercultural awareness is important. This effort is part of the project goals of the new Intercultural Language Resource Center that is supported by a $180,000 grant from the United States Department of Education UISFL program.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

It will enhance the LIS major Multiple Languages Concentration by adding new content directly addressing learning outcomes in intercultural awareness. It will also support the European Studies minor (as well as the proposed Eurasian Studies minor). It will also enhance the experience of students in English, because the cross-listing will provide the opportunity for engagement with students who are studying the Russian language.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None, since it is an existing course; we are simply adding the cross-listed section and will allocate a certain amount of seats to that sections.
