HIST 490 – Readings Seminar in History (3 credits) In this course, students are expected to identify, evaluate, compare, and differentiate between biased assertions and informed interpretations of the past, recognizing that the discipline of history is a continuous discourse between sources and scholarship. They are also expected to articulate arguments that may center on a diverse range of supporting evidence and analytical commentary. This course may be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit under different topics. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The creation of this course allows for the addition of a topics course in each of the 5 skills categories for the updated History major. As a result, when students are in extenuating circumstances, this course will be available for an independent study. Also, given the limited numbers available for new History courses, this will allow faculty to develop new curriculum, offering a class once before entering it into the catalog, without using up another course number for a class that they may not teach again. This option is especially important for new faculty who may not have courses already in the catalog related to their areas of specialization.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The only impact will be positive, as this will provide a creative and flexible solution to a number of potential situations (as explained above).

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None

There should be no additional costs associated with this course, because faculty can offer it as part of their usual course load.
