HIST 405 - Topics in Late Antique Religious History (3 credits) This course examines the cultural, economic, political, and military historical developments that altered the Mediterranean world between c. 200 and 800 CE and their impact on diverse religious traditions, illustrating how various religious identities responded to one another and the transformative events of this period. Topics may include the monastic movement, the persistence of paganism, ethnicity and identity, Christianization, shifts in religious art and architecture, urbanization, or other topics as determined by the instructor. This course may be taken for up to six hours of credit under different topics. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The creation of this course allows for the addition of a topics course in late ancient religious history, which is Dr. Barnes's area of research specialization. Because of the limited numbers available for new History courses, this will allow for the development of new curriculum in this period of history, which is currently limited. For example, this would make it possible to offer a variety of courses that would have wide student appeal, such as a class on the rise and development of monasticism, a course on women's leadership in Roman paganism, or a course on the intersectionality of multi-cultural religious discourses and ethnicity and identity in late antiquity.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The only impact that the addition of this course will have is positive, as it will expand the late antique history course offerings available and provide the ability to create new and dynamic curriculum. Although this is a history course, it could easily compliment curriculum offerings in the Religious Studies major without duplicating that program's offerings, because Dr. Barnes is the only tenure-track professor who specializes in this period of history. Also, this course will be taught specifically through a historian's lens, making it a decidedly unique course in terms of topics and chronologies and its methodological approach.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None
