HIST 454- Seminar in Conflict, Peace, and Social Justice in Latin America (3 credits). A study of the roots and contemporary realities of human rights movements in Latin America. Students examine the origins of human rights crises in deeper social and political structures and analyze how the forces of peace and violence have shaped Latin American society over time. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The instructor has spent time in regions of Latin America working with social justice groups and meeting with peace activists. The instructor has deep teaching experience with interpretation of Truth Commission Reports and understanding of their processes, as an example of content knowledge. Students in the instructor's prior courses have expressed interest in these topics and have written senior capstone papers on topics from the instructor's courses they have taken in the past.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This will give History Majors a course that fulfills their required credit hours at the 300-level or above. It will also be added to the course list for courses in the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Minor.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

The instructor has already developed several modules for this course and it will be a course that is taught in the normal faculty load.
