COMM 301 - Intercultural Communication (3 credits)(=LIS 301) Focuses on the dynamics of how culture influences the communication process. Considers topics such as the roles of rituals and social dramas and provides an extensive and relevant discussion of different worldviews to gain “cultural competency.” F, S, M, Su, W.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This change represents the Communication, Media and Culture's efforts to recognize current courses that did not have a "Q" designation but were being taught with experiential learning components. The instructors who regularly teach this course in the classroom agree that the "Q" designation is appropriate given that this course regularly includes experiential learning activities as learning tools.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This addition of the "Q" listing will expand the CMC Department's Q course listings and allow students who complete the course to satisfy their EL graduation requirement.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

The course will continue to be taught in-load; the only change proposed is the addition of the Q to recognize the experiential learning happening in the class.

Any additional information

The existing syllabus on record reflects the EL activities offered in this course. The experiential number of contact hours was calculated based upon the "Explore and Experience weeks" of the course as well as the Interview project: Students conduct research (interviews and discourse analysis) outside the classroom (10 hours), produce a short film on an international experience of their own or a participant's and/or analyze ethnographic films/documentaries on specific cultures (5-10 hours). By conducting research, students will apply intercultural communication methodology and theory in different contexts of everyday life. And by using film production skills, students will gain experience in communicating cultural experience to diverse audiences as well as enrich their cultural competence in relation to their career goals.
