COMM 399 - Independent Study in Communication (1 to 3 credits) Designed for advanced and self-motivated students, this course allows students to conduct scholarly work in an academic area not offered in the traditional course format resulting in a document, performance, or body of work that reflects the student’s research or summarizes knowledge synthesized during a structured, sequenced order of study. Students may take a maximum of six independent study credits. No two independent studies per student may be the same topic. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This change represents the Communication, Media and Culture's efforts to recognize current courses that did not have a "Q" designation but were being taught with experiential learning components. The instructors who regularly teach this course in the classroom agree that the "Q" designation is appropriate given that this course regularly includes experiential learning activities as learning tools.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This addition of the "Q" listing will expand the CMC Department's Q course listings and allow students who complete the course to satisfy their EL graduation requirement.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

The course will continue to be taught in-load; the only change proposed is the addition of the Q to recognize the experiential learning happening in the class.

The existing syllabus on record reflects the use of experiential learning techniques in this course. By conducting independent research on a communication topic, students will engage in experiential learning by applying communication methodology and theory in different contexts of communication in everyday life.
