LIS 380 Italian Cultures and Films (3 credits). Taught in English, this course offers interdisciplinary explorations of Italian cultures, history, society, and politics through a broad sample of texts and films from World War II to the present. While examining Italian cultures as reflections of past and current sociopolitical trends, students develop a sense of cinematic literacy that helps them to become active interpreters of cinematic and narrative texts and to become acquainted with the cultural and historical background that produced them. Readings are in English and films are in Italian with English subtitles. No knowledge of Italian is required for this course. This course may be repeated up to two times for credit under different topics. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Taught in English, this is the first course that introduces students to contemporary Italian cultures and cinema from an interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This course expands the offering of the LIS department upper-level courses to include Italian studies. Students pursuing a major or minor in LIS (Area studies, Multiple Languages) can now study specific aspects of Italian cultures and cinema to complement their education. Students minoring in European Studies can take it as an elective.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

Purchasing new films through the library and/or the ILRC center (budget attached).

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

This will be taught by existing faculty as part of the normal teaching load.
