Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

New Core assessment procedures are to be implemented in the new academic year for Science courses. The need to submit new Core assessment procedures precipitated a discussion with the Human Anatomy and Physiology coordinator, the coordinators for assessment in Biology, and multiple faculty in affected departments if the course would be removed from the Core. The class coordinator said the requirement for certain content for BIOL 232L to enable students to use the course for later health graduate program admission requirements has made it impossible to meet the Core goals for science that focus on science as a process. In other Biology classes used for the Core Science goal we have multiple-week activities to meet this goal. This multiple-week need to adequately address the Core Science goal is now beyond the time available in BIOL 232L. Biology is still trying to help CCU students meet this Core Science goal via BIOL 101L and BIOL 121L staying in the Core.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

I have spoken to the Chairs of PSYC, PUBH, EXSS, and multiple members of the Physical Education program because all of them have students required to take BIOL 232L for their major, and therefore can use this course to meet their students' Core Science requirement. The Chairs of PSYC, PUBH, EXSS all said their students take multiple science courses that can satisfy the Core Science Goal so removal of BIOL 232L from the list of possible courses will not affect them. Physical Education faculty did express a concern because it was the only course their students use for this Core goal, and their students already have to take more than 120 credits to graduate. I spoke with the coordinator again following this discussion and he reiterated that there was not enough time in the semester to satisfy both requirements, so this request to remove BIOL 232L will require Physical Education students to take an additional lab science course to meet the Core Science goal.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

BIOL 232L is required for several majors as part of their regular curricula and this course will still be used for those needs and we do not anticipate a change in enrollment.
