Current catalog description

SOC 480 Q*- Environmental Sociology (3 credits) (Prereq: SOC 101 or SOC 102 and junior standing; or permission of the instructor) This course examines key issues in the relationship between society and the natural environment. The primary focus is on social structural and cultural factors behind environmental and resource problems. Attention, however, is also given to social consequences of environmental degradation (e.g., social and economic disruption) and to social responses to environmental and resource problems (e.g., change in culture/attitudes about environmental issues, the environmental movement, community mobilization against threats). This course is a service learning course that requires 15 hours of fieldwork. Offered as needed.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Many sociology students enter this class with limited knowledge of environmental issues. Sometimes students say they are intimidated by the advanced course number on a subject they don't feel they have much background in. The class covers introductory topics related to the environmental sociology subfield, therefore a 300 level designation is appropriate. A lower course number may also increase enrollment.
