MTM 502 Music Technology Pedagogy. (0 credits) This course is for graduate students in the Master of Arts in Music Technology Program. Examines the philosophy, techniques, and materials needed to teach music technology in both a K-12 and post-secondary institutional setting. Covers topics such as: educational philosophies and theories, classroom management approaches, and performance-based assessment techniques for incorporating music technology in the classroom setting. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This course is designed for Graduate Teaching Assistants during their first semester of the Master of Arts in Music Technology program. This course is important for our Master of Arts in Music Technology students as they prepare for work opportunities after graduation. Prominent job opportunities include teaching music technology courses and/or embedding music technology content within a K-12 or post-secondary institution. Specifically, this course is necessary as much of the content focuses on: 1. Evaluating and implementing common education pedagogies, philosophies and the applications of those theories for teaching music technology in both a K-12 and post-secondary institutional setting. An example of this include evaluating the different stages of Bloom's Taxonomy, a taxonomy focused on the hierarchal levels of thinking – which is important when working with students with diverse backgrounds of content knowledge as well as organizing and identifying course objectives when teaching music technology-related course. Other examples include: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development, and Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development. 2. Developing instructional strategies relating to individual learning styles to meet the needs of exceptional, diverse, and culturally diverse learners while teaching music technology. An example of this includes addressing different learning styles such as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners with strategies of incorporating different activities throughout a lesson to meet the needs of each type of learner. Another example would be to discuss techniques for implementing various genres and cultures of music within a music technology lesson. 3. Exploring and discussing current issues, trends, resources, and materials for teaching music technology in the K-12 and post-secondary educational settings. An example of this includes discussing that many K-12 schools are implementing "1-to-1" initiatives by providing each student within a school with an iPad, Chromebook, or similar device. In turn, this course explores ways to engage, provide, and teach students various programs and activities related to music technology. Common trends may include teaching students how to compose original music and/or how to "sample" (modify) existing content.
