Explain We are restructuring our program to better serve our students. In the Soc Foundation section and as noted above we are: 1) deleting the additional lab science req. and 2) removing the outside stats req. because we are going to teach in-house. We have added a section, Social Theory and Research, mostly a reorganization of formerly required classes and added new course SOC 326 to this section. In Medicine and Health Electives section - the requirement changed from 3 to 4 classes. We added a new Senior Capstone Section where we have included SOC 496/SOC 496L an option. The only new course proposed is SOC 326. All other courses are currently listed in the catalog.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Our program and student enrollment has grown dramatically over the past 10 years with addition of concentrations and minors. Better and tighter reorganization of the major and concentrations are required to provide clear direction and understanding to students of program requirements. For instance we have reorganized and added a class to form a new section on Social Theory and Research, which is essential to our discipline.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Overall, these changes will have a positive impact on the Sociology program. Our soc concentrations and minors will become more streamlined. Also, reducing Soc Foundation requirements outside our discipline allows our students to take more SOC classes to better prepare them for their careers and/or graduate school. Additionally, changes will allow enough flexibility in remaining elective hours so students can pick up a minor, which we strongly encourage.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

This is basically a reorganization and doesn't affect current offerings. Our faculty is increasing: We had one new hire this past year and one transfer to TT line. Searches are now underway for two new hires in Fall 2022. Additionally, we have a visiting prof for the next 3 years. There will be enough faculty to cover the addition of SOC 326 and one more SOC elective.
